How Acupuncture May Help Recovery Between Athletic Workouts

There’s a lot going on in the time between high-intensity training sessions for professional athletes: tissue repair, nervous system regulation, energy restoration, and adaptation to training. When recovery is incomplete, soreness can linger, performance can stall, and the risk of overuse injury may increase (Kellmann et al., 2018; Brenner & Watson, 2024).
If you’re a part-time athlete with a full-time job, the intensity and frequency of workouts may not be as high, but on a relative basis, your efforts may produce the same need for physical recovery time.
The time between workouts should be considered an important component of any physically demanding schedule, and the addition of acupuncture may help make recovery time more productive.
The recovery time timeline
Training creates stress. Hard sessions, especially those involving less common muscle actions such as downhill running, heavy lowering phases in strength training, sprinting, jumping, or abrupt changes of direction, can produce microscopic muscle damage and an inflammatory response. This is a normal part of body adaptation, but it can also lead to delayed-onset muscle soreness, often called DOMS. DOMS commonly appears within the first day after strenuous exercise and can peak between 24 and 72 hours. There is stiffness, tenderness, reduced range of motion, and temporary declines in force production.
How acupuncture may help
Sleep, nutrition, and hydration, are all important for helping the body return to readiness. Adding acupuncture treatments into the mix may help the body use this time more effectively.
In a recovery context, acupuncture may be used to address muscle soreness, localized tightness, pain sensitivity, muscle function, and general stress. Improving recovery time does not mean rushing the body before it is ready. Instead, the goal is to support normal repair so the athlete can train again with better movement quality, lower discomfort, and less cumulative fatigue. Acupuncture may fit into this goal by influencing pain perception, local circulation, muscle tone, and nervous system balance.
What evidence is there?
Although acupuncture is an ancient practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine it is increasingly being affirmed through the lens of modern sports science. Published clinical evidence on acupuncture for athletic recovery looks promising.
A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology examined randomized controlled trials on acupuncture for DOMS after strenuous exercise. Acupuncture was associated with reduced muscle soreness ratings, lower creatine kinase levels, and improved maximal isometric force after intense exercise. The authors also noted that the recovery-related effects appeared to begin around 24 hours and may be strongest around 72 hours after exercise (Huang et al., 2020).
These findings are relevant because creatine kinase is commonly used as a marker related to muscle damage, while maximal isometric force reflects an athlete’s ability to produce strength after fatigue or soreness. If acupuncture helps reduce soreness while supporting strength recovery, it could be especially useful during dense training blocks, tournament schedules, or return-to-training phases.
However, the research is not uniform. Another 2020 systematic review concluded that acupuncture showed very-small-to-moderate effects for DOMS-related pain relief, while also noting that follow-up data were insufficient for stronger conclusions (Chang et al., 2020).
Possible acupuncture mechanisms
Needle stimulation can activate sensory nerves and may influence nervous system function, other body tissues, and nonspecific treatment effects, all of which may contribute to pain relief (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2026). For an athlete experiencing post-training soreness, this may reduce discomfort enough to improve movement quality, sleep, or willingness to perform light recovery activity.
Acupuncture may also affect local blood flow and tissue environment. Increased circulation to an area could theoretically help deliver oxygen and nutrients while supporting the removal of metabolic by-products associated with hard training.
Another possible mechanism involves the nervous system. Intense training can leave the body in a heightened sympathetic state, sometimes described as being stuck in “fight or flight.” Athletes may feel wired, sleep poorly, or struggle to relax after demanding sessions. Acupuncture sessions are often calming, and some athletes report improved relaxation after treatment. If acupuncture helps shift the body toward a more parasympathetic state, it may indirectly support recovery by improving rest, sleep quality, and tissue repair conditions.
Muscle tone is another consideration. Tight or guarded muscles can alter biomechanics, limit range of motion, and increase perceived effort during subsequent training. By influencing neuromuscular signaling and pain sensitivity, acupuncture may help reduce protective tension. This does not replace mobility work, strengthening, or technical correction, but it may make those interventions easier to perform effectively.

Safety considerations
Acupuncture is generally considered low risk when performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner. Minor soreness, bruising, light bleeding, or temporary fatigue can occur (Mayo Clinic, n.d.; National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2026). Anyone with a bleeding disorder, compromised immune system, needle sensitivity, implanted medical device, pregnancy-related concerns, or a complex medical history should speak with a health professional before treatment.
Athletes should also avoid using acupuncture to mask serious warning signs. Sharp pain, sudden swelling, loss of function, numbness, suspected fracture, concussion symptoms, or pain that worsens with activity should be evaluated medically. Recovery tools are helpful only when they support wise decision-making; they become risky if they encourage an athlete to train through an unresolved injury.
